President Daniel Arap Moi of Kenya |
Kenya’s president Daniel arap Moi is the president of a country which has seen half a million people die of Aids. 500 people in Kenya die every day of the disease. However, President Moi refuses to tell his people that the use of a condom is an effective way to stop the spreading of the virus because condom use goes against “the accepted cultural moral values” of his countrymen and he personally feels it would be simply improper to encourage the use of condoms.
Up until just recently, and only after AIDS had been declared a National disaster, any awareness education on the disease was banned from the school curriculum. An estimated 2 million of the 30 million citizens of his nation have AIDS, but President Moi has publicly stated that telling people about how condoms can help reverse the infection rates in his country is inexcusable.
If it is improper to use a condom and save a life, it must be proper to sit back and so nothing feasible to prevent it. Death, in his eyes of his government, must be the appropriate consequence to having unprotected sex. No, actually its worse than that. Death is the appropriate consequence for sex period, since in his government’s eyes there is no other kind of permissible sex.
Now what does he expect from his people sexual abstinence? Not only is that not feasible but that is the quickest way to kill off a nation, a culture, a way of life. If you don’t fuck, there are no more children, if there are no children you die off and everything you were and could be is lost.
What choices has President Moi given his people? What are his countrymen’s accepted moral and cultural values? I want to hear this. The Kenyan people are not waiting until they are married to have sex, obviously, and although they can hope that they do this, the last time I checked marriage wasn’t a cure for the HIV virus either, not unless EVERYONE decided to wait until they were married to have sex. Never, at no time, in human history has this ever been the case, even in the most sexually repressed civilizations that people across the board waiting until they were married to have any sort of sexual relations. And that is exactly what it would take. If one half of the union waited until they were married, and the other half didn’t they could still bring the virus into the union and kill them both. President Moi is a stubborn, deontologically retentive, criminally naive dreamer if he thinks that he is not responsible, at least partially, for the deaths of his people by refusing to make them aware that they could have a chance at living. Moi is reluctant to stand up to the powerful Catholic church lobby in his country, which thinks that talking about condom use will encourage the teens to have sex. Don't even get me started on Christian Missionaries.
If I hear this bullshit one more muthafuckin time, I am going to fall over and die. Listen, if they weren’t already having sex they wouldn’t be dying of aids at a rate of 500 a day. You are encouraging them to have sex by NOT letting them know how fucking dangerous it has become by acting as if this mysterious little sickness is just arbitrarily killing people. You are killing them by trying to ignore the fact that they are already fucking, by hiding behind the hope that not acknowledging what is going on is helping them. For god’s sake the condom is the only known prevention against contracting the HIV virus after you have become sexually active. Condoms and of course abstinence, and let me tell you, you would probably save more lives by telling them how fucked up AIDS is and EXACTLY how you contract it, than by acting like it doesn’t exists by withholding the education your people need. |
