Bush has met with Gay Republicans? This is rich. Bush has taken a page right out of Bill Clinton’s war book and has been trying to portray himself as a different kind of Republican - much as Bill Clinton and Al Gore painted themselves as a new breed of Democrat in 1992.
He wants us to see him as a “compassionate conservative”. Isn’t this the same George W. Bush that publicly mocked Karla Tucker's Clemency plea as `Please,' Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, `don't kill me' ?
Bush is meeting with groups outside of the “Republican Core” to find support in this new Republican image he is trying to build. He said after the meeting that he was a better person for the meeting, whatever that means, but went on to further assure conservatives that his “social views” were still intact, which means he is still against homosexual marriage, same sex health care benefits, the whole package. Bush emerged “touched” but unchanged in his core beliefs, including his belief that marriage is the union of a man and a woman.
So I ask, what is the point in Gays meeting with Bush? Like I asked in earlier articles what was the point of GLADD meeting with Dr. Laura? Bush owes too much to anti-gay leaders like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell to deliver anything for the gay and lesbian community.
The Gay Republicans he met with in this touching “meeting”, were hand picked by his campaign. Ah, I see it is all starting to make sense. With this said, it is not hard to understand why they said this next quote: ``The goal was not to change his (Bush) mind. It was to start a conversation.'' The goal was to start conversation? This meeting was not to start a conversation, it was to give the illusion that he is a “different kind” of Republican. If Bush maintains his position on social issues regarding homosexuals the only reason I can see for having a “conversation” would be because these Gay Republicans were unaware what position he held in the first place.
Although Bush met with these handpicked politically safe “Gay Republicans” which is a joke in-and-of-itself, the policies he holds are not inclusive of homosexuals, so meeting with them or wanting their support is pointless if you are not going to address their concerns and help bring their issues to some sort of resolution.
``It's important for the next president to listen to people's real-life stories,'' the governor said. ``These are people from our neighborhoods, people with whom all of us went to school. ... I appreciate them sharing their stories with me. I'm mindful that we're all God's children." |
