Rebecca Bridgers has not been to school since September. Rebecca and her father say images in the schoolbooks are evil. So evil in fact are the schoolbooks that they caused Rebecca to develop asthma.

So instead of going to school, she spends her time praying that God will make her skin dark enough so that she will be able attend her church. That's because her religion teaches that God accepts only people with very dark complexions.

The schoolbooks are evil because they are filled with images perpetrated by the “evil white man,” or “paleface.”

Rebecca and some of her family are members of the New Jerusalem Church of the Firstborn and speak Hebrew. Members of the church are followers of a woman they call "Mount Zion."

Rebecca and her family are involved in a lawsuit that will pit mandatory school attendance head to head against religious beliefs. They're scheduled to appear before a judge next month, and Bridgers' father could be jailed for failing to send his daughter to school. They say forcing the girl to go to school is a violation of their religious freedom. The school system says it is simply enforcing the compulsory attendance law.
