Run for your lives. Here comes another group of conservatives with good intentions.
A new program called C.R.A.C.K Children Requiring A Caring Kommunity has come up with this grand idea to offer crack heads 200 bucks to sterilize themselves to prevent them from giving birth to children addicted to crack-cocaine.
Ok, I get the premise. I actually agree with the premise.
No one wants to see the world filled with crack-cocaine addicted children that chances are will be abused, neglected, born with God knows what kind of learning disabilities just to end up as fucked up as the mother as a result.
However
Do you really think a fucking crack head, who regularly prostitutes what little dignity she has for a 5 dollar piece of cocaine-baking soda is in the right state of mind to be held legally responsible for making a decision of this magnitude? And Conservative do-gooders have the fucking audacity to call that decision, made by an admitted crack head a "free choice"? If I can legally get out of a contract by proving that I signed it while under duress, what do you call signing a contract while Jones-ing for a crack rock?
I think calling a choice someone makes that is under the influence of drugs, exercising "free choice" in-and-of-itself a bit of a stretch. Poor decision making skills should be a necessary and sufficient component to the definition of the word "addict".
I think I have pinpointed exactly why Conservatives are consistently unsuccessful in shaking the "nearsighted heartless bastard" shadow they cast wherever they go. Surprisingly enough, source of this shadow doesn't lay behind the shape of their intentions.
I believe that conservatives are capable, at least in theory, of doing good in a progressive society. The problem is that at the exact same time that they are professing these grand ideas that are aimed to help "save" society, they cannot shake this urge to stay true to their primary principle which is still saving a buck.
Maybe I am a cynical bastard but I can't shake the idea that the reason they are offering crack heads 200 dollars for sterilization is because it is less expensive than trying to raise money to get them into drug treatment.
200 dollars to a hardcore crack head looks like 2 million would to us. They know this.
Whatever drives a person to seek an escape from their reality over seeking a solution to their problems are as varied and as abundant as there are people. However, the way to prevent drugs as being an option and to get people from abusing drugs is the same.
What people need to confute their demons is a little thing called Hope. Hope, at least historically, is one of the most difficult things to sell to people living in economically depressed areas of the world.
I have never done a drug in my life. I am not strong. I am not exceptionally anything. I am just an average Joe that was always aware that I had a future. My experience has been that is the one thing people tend to not throw away when two conditions exist. First, they have to actually believe they actually have a future. And secondly, they have to see their future as perishable.
Apparently, Hope doesn't come cheap. At least it seems to be more expensive than the 200 bucks people are willing to invest to sterilize. |
